Phonics for Spelling, Writing, & Reading

Spell to Write and Read and Logic of English are two excellent curriculums which use logical and systematic phonics to give students a solid foundation in spelling, writing, and reading.

Spell to Write and Read

We have used Spell to Write and Read in our home for five years and I am so pleased with the solid foundation it has provided for my children in the areas of spelling, writing, and reading.

Cursive First

Spell to Write and Read recommends starting with cursive because it is more natural for beginners and it helps to eliminate dyslexia. We have had ease of learning and success with cursive as we have implemented this curriculum:

Spell to Write and Read and Cursive First with my newly adopted son:

My son was adopted from Haiti in August of 2016. At the time he was close to six years of age, he had little experience with holding a pencil, and he was completely new to the English language.

For the 2016/2017 school year I used Spell to Write and Read’s step-by-step process of phonics and Cursive First.

After nine months at a steady pace—working about 20 minutes a day—my son was able to correctly say and write the phonetic letter sounds of the alphabet as well as connect letters into words.

My Haitian-American son’s spelling list, spring of 2017, nine months after being in the U.S.A:

Logic of English

I recently discovered a newer curriculum, Logic of English. While it is not as cost-effective as Spell to Write and Read, it uses the same time-proven principles of logical and systematic phonics and it offers an easy-to-use and easy-to-teach format.

Benefits of Logic of English . . .

  • Uses the time-proven method of logical and systematic phonics.
  • Easy-to-use format
  • Engaging materials
  • Includes a handwriting program with the option of cursive or manuscript.
  • Complete language arts curriculum for ages 4-7.
  • Spelling, reading, and grammar for ages 7+.
