Logical and systematic phonics—an excellent way to give students a solid foundation in spelling, writing, and reading.

Spell to Write and Read by Wanda Sanseri and Logic of English by Denise Eide are curriculums that use logical and systematic phonics.

In this post I will briefly explain the benefits of Spell to Write and Read, show the materials I use, and give an example of how Spell to Write and Read has worked for us.

I will then introduce Logic of English, which is a newer program that I recently discovered.

Benefits of Spell to Write and Read . . .

  • Uses the time-proven method of logical and systematic phonics.

  • Offers the choice of either cursive or manuscript handwriting.
  • Can be used as a complete language arts program for the first four years.

I also use a dry-erase board on an easel so that it can be easily stored out of the way when needed.

Spell to Write and Read recommends starting with cursive because it is more natural for beginners and it helps to eliminate dyslexia.

Pictured below is the Cursive First curriculum.

An example of how Spell to Write and Read has worked for us:

At the beginning of the school year I started homeschooling my Kindergarten age son, who had recently been adopted from Haiti. He had little experience with holding a pencil and was completely new to the English language.

We used Spell to Write and Read’s step-by-step process of logical and systematic phonics and Cursive First.

After nine months at a steady pace—working about 20 minutes a day—my son was able to correctly say and write the phonetic letter sounds of the alphabet as well as connect letters into words.

The following is a picture of my son’s spelling list at the end of his Kindergarten year:

Logic of English

Essentials-tree

While I love Spell to Write and Read as it provides a wealth of information and is very cost effective, I did find it to be a little overwhelming with learning how to teach it.

I recently discovered a new curriculum, Logic of English, which uses the same time-proven principles as Spell to Write and Read, but with greater ease of teaching.

I would highly recommend Logic of English to those who are willing to spend a little more for an easy-to-use format and greater ease of teaching.

Benefits of Logic of English . . .

  • Uses the time-proven method of logical and systematic phonics.
  • Easy-to-use format
  • Engaging materials
  • Includes a handwriting program with the option of cursive or manuscript.
  • Complete language arts curriculum for ages 4-7.
  • Spelling, reading, and grammar for ages 7+.

I hope this post has been helpful to you in the presentation of two excellent curriculums that use the time-proven method of logical and systematic phonics.
